You hear the air in your ears, as it blows. It tells you the wind is strong.
You hear the heart beat of your loved one, and its fast. It tells you there is a sign of life.
You hear the sweet and encouraging word of your parents, it tells you of their kindness.
Hearing all of this and listening, then knowing.
If we were not listening, what could we know?
Do we ever appreciate our ability to listen?
Rare for me, but today I did.
I’m writing this, so you too, could be reminded,
To sit down or, stand still, breath in, and appreciate, listening.
I imagined without listening, I would not be able to hear my mother and father’s corny jokes.
My grandma’s contagious laughter.
My sister’s unique voice and my youngest sister call for me, when she needs help.
I imagined without listening, I would not hear the person that would tell me they love me.
I would not be able to help my friends with their troubles and celebrate with them their accomplishments.
When I reflected on those, I realized I have taken for granted this ability to listen.
For without it, I would not know who I am,
Without it, I would not know what my purpose is, my voice,
Lastly, without the ability to listen, I would not be able to do what the nature of the spark of life is destined to do,
That is to love and be loved.
For without listening,
How can you know the truth in someone’s words?
Today, and for the rest of the days, I hope I remember, you remember too.
To always listen, to your mentors, teachers, loved ones, family friends and to your heart.
Because one day, it might be too late to know.
